Presidential Candidacy!
Sean Johnson’s email stated:
To All:
In past years I did not listen or watch much about the run for presidency. I have been paying more attention this year, but this is only the second time I have been eligible to vote. I read what Kerry wrote and I could not agree more. I conducted a bit of a survey for my personal benefit to hear what people had to say about both Senator Obama, and Senator Clinton. I was not shocked to find out that women tend to lean more towards Senator Clinton than Senator Obama. African Americans tend to lean more toward Senator Obama. I am sad to say that I was almost expecting these results. Much like Kerry stated in an earlier email, it seems as if we want someone in office that looks like us(not just as African Americans, but as people period). I would like to pose a question to all who receive this email. I am a little worried that the Democratic party has been put in a bit of a bind. We are going for two firsts as I am sure everyone is well aware. An African American president, or a woman president. My question to all is this: Do you think that the Democratic party has a legitimate chance to win the overall election, or have we almost set ourselves up for another four years with a Republican?
I hope I have not offended anyone in this email. Like I said this is only my second election, and I would like to get opinions other than my own.

I’m glad to see that you’re talking about something other than Madden ’08. J/K. (BTW, Mom bough Madden ’08 for the Wii; I’ll teach you how to play the next time you come home. LOL)
On a serious note, the short answer to your question is: YES. BUT, you and your friends have to get out and vote. You’re 22 and I don’t have numbers to support it, but from what I have seen in polling locations are middle-to-upper aged men and women regardless of race; young white men and women, and a sprinkle, at best, of young black men and women. Again, that’s my own perception from what I have personally witnessed. What I have come to notice at work is that young white men and women talk about politics the way many of us talk about sports. They also talk about finances (the market, investments, etc.) the way we talk about the latest CD. WE need to do a better job of the same. I’m not saying we shouldn’t feel the way we do about music, or we shouldn’t be passionate about our sports teams, but politics, money, etc. … those things need to be talked about in our circles. We should assimilate. I know I’ll get some ‘I ain’t assimilating; I’m keeping it real’. ‘Keeping it Real’, in that sense, is overrated. Keeping it real is being able to tell my son about the people that are making the decisions that ultimately govern the way we live here in the U.S. Keeping it real is having the comfort in knowing, should I pass untimely, my family will be taken care of because we made some sound investments. I’m getting off topic, so I’ll sign off for now.
BUT … before I go, just to put a spin on this topic. Some have mentioned that the problem with any Democrat coming in is that they will be tasked with ‘fixing’ what Bush has broken over the last 8 years. I am not the biggest Bush fan … but … someone mentioned to me that some things that are ‘broken’ now were broken before Bush. Your beloved Bill was in office 8 years before him.

First off, let me say I am proud to see an Aggie initiating this discussion.
Secondly, I will be voting for Barrack for several reasons. No, I do not feel that we should vote for Barrack just because he is black. One, he is not tainted. I like the fact that he has not spent umpteen years in the Senate. He hasn’t fallen victim to the poison that infects the majority of the politians in DC. He voted against the invasion of Iraq… Hillary was for it. He is a man of great faith…. Christian faith. It took confidence and boldness to stand up at the national Democratic convention several years ago and profess his service for God. Very few politicians have the pair (excuse me ladies) to do so. He has received positive comments about his candidacy from several international leaders. The majority of the countries in this world, with the exception of several in Europe, are people of color. I think that international relations will run a little more smoothly when they negotiate with someone of their same skin tone. Of course, that will not be the only factor that helps in that department but Barrack is sincere, intelligent, and able to influence people to believe in him. Young people have turned out in massive numbers to support Barrack and just vote in general. This is a high point for democracy…. and Barrack deserves a good amount of credit for that. Look at the other nations where countless people have died because they opposed a dictator or felt their vote didn’t matter due to a fraudulent election. This is a different time than when Rev. Jesse Jackson ran for president. Jesse did put up a minimal threat to the other front-runner (Dukakis) but his influence did not reach beyond the lines of race like Barrack’s has. Barrack’s nose isn’t clean… he smoked a little dope… but who hasn’t… except for my clean-teen wife? Nor is he the answer to all our problems but he is a giant leap in the right direction.
If you would have asked me who I was voting for in the beginning of the campaign season I would have said Hillary, John Edwards or Barrack. Now that Edwards has dropped and Hillary has been exposed, my decision has been made easier. I ask you, why did Bill Clinton have Hillary’s college thesis sealed when he was president? Why did Hillary give more credit to Lyndon Johnson for the progress made in the civil rights movement for blacks than Dr. King? Why has she and Bill made slandering comments about Barrack when he turned out to be a legitmate threat? Let’s keep in mind, Hillary is not that far removed from being a republican. The last I checked, congressman can vote either way on bills and if you look at Hillary’s trends I think you will be able to deduce her mindset.
Who knows, maybe they will join forces, and run together on the same ticket, but until that happens I am voting for Barrack. I urge everyone to not vote for one person because of their skin color or sex but for change.

Sean, I think the Democrats have a chance but I’m interested in the word “legitimate” that you used. I have been afraid from the beginning of what is now happening. The Republicans are now getting their momentum up and now that Romney has stepped aside they are going to have the advantage of unifying their party behind McCain. In being in the political arena I can tell you that the real decisions are never made by those in front of the cameras. I’m afraid that the Democratic party while trying to be the voice of change and “every man” may have sealed their fate. The power brokers behind the scenes are not ready for that kind of change and I’ll be extremely surprised if either Hillary or Barrack wins. I do not believe most thought Barrack could win early on until they heard him speak and realized , “Hey, this is an intelligent black man”. And once he established himself as a legitimate candidate all the rules changed. I was watching CNN and someone said that the power to unite the Republican party was going to come from the Democrats and I believe that to be true. People would rather vote based on who they DON’T want as opposed to who they believe in. Hence, the people who were against McCain who will now support him. But even if Barrack does not make it to the White House in November I’m sure the negotiations are already underway for him to still come out on top with his future endeavors. Its just the way of the world of politics. I lived through a similar episode of this in Ohio government. Which is truly a Republican power state with a gang of Democrats trying to find their voice and make change. Ohio had a very popular Republican in office, he doesn’t run for reelection, a very intelligent black man runs for office, the Republican party brings an old familiar party person back to the area (buys him a house and everything) to run against him and folks flocked to the polls to make sure the republican hold did not let up. The Democrat ended up with an appointment to another position. So everyone’s happy in the end…..All we can do is exercise our voices through vote to try to change the establishment and the unspoken rules one election at a time.
